Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
