Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such medications need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
